In one day, a single volunteer with no previous construction experience can mud and spackle several rooms, install a new floor or paint a small house. Imagine what’s possible in two days—or two weeks, or a month? The more volunteers we have, the greater our impact.
Individuals and groups can volunteer in any of the locations in which SHUR is currently active. Corporate groups, school groups and religious groups are welcomed. Our experienced site supervisors will train and equip you, with your safety our top priority.
As a volunteer, you will literally help rebuild a family’s home. This may include hanging insulation or drywall, mudding/spackling, sanding, texturing, priming, painting, laying floors, and/or hanging trim, doors and baseboards.
While there is no experience necessary, if you have significant experience in any of these areas or in framing, electrical, plumbing and/or cabinetry, please inform the Volunteer Department prior to your arrival so that we can assign you to a specialty team.
Who will you help?
Volunteers help rebuild for families impacted by Hurricane Harvey.
What will you do?
No construction experience necessary!
Volunteers help with many different phases of construction such as mucking & gutting, demolition, insulation, mold remediation, drywall, mudding or spackling, priming, painting, flooring, trim, doors and final punch. All training, safety instruction/gear and supervision provided.
Where will you volunteer?
SHUR is helping to rebuild homes in many different neighborhoods across the Southwest Houston area and working on multiple different homes at any given time. Depending on the particular phase of construction and size of the home, each active site could take anywhere from 5-20 volunteers at a time (the average is 10-15). If you are part of a large group you may be split up at multiple houses.
Who can volunteer?
Individuals and groups are welcomed to volunteer!
Children ages 13 and under are not allowed to volunteer or be on a construction worksite. On occasion we do have landscaping jobs that might be appropriate for this age group. Please ask our volunteer coordinator.
High School youth (based on their current grade) my participate with parental permission in one of two ways:
They may serve with their parent or guardian or
They may serve with a group. We require that youth serving in a group be chaperoned and that there be a minimum of two adults, and at least 1 adults for every 4 youth.
18 and older – no restrictions but we do require a background check for all volunteers 18 years or older
Volunteers are required to purchase a background check from Sterling Volunteers for the total of $12.50. Benefits:
1) This check is valid for up to two years.
2) Transferable to any institution that uses Sterling Volunteers
3) By having the volunteer purchase their own B.C., that gives us at SHUR more focus on the resources that families need to help rebuild their homes
If someone *needs* assistance paying for a background check, we can be of assistance.
What is the time commitment?
Our work days are generally 8:30-4:30 (with the exception of special events) with a lunch break. You can volunteer for as many days as you like.
Volunteering for multiple days in a row creates the greatest impact because it gives you time gain confidence and efficiency in your construction task.
What to expect onsite?
Please make sure everyone in your group is bringing plenty of water for the day! It is recommended people serving outside drink a gallon of water per day!
Volunteers are required to bring their own work gloves, safety goggles/glasses, SPF 30+ sunblock, and a water bottle.
